Small Business Innovation Research
& Small Business Technology Transfer
(SBIR/STTR) Grants

The SBIR program encourages domestic small businesses to engage in federal research and research and development (R/R&D) that has the potential for commercialization

Through a competitive awards-based program, SBIR enables small businesses to explore their technological potential and provides the incentive to profit from its commercialization.

The programs' goals are to:

  • Stimulate technological innovation

  • Foster technology transfer through cooperative R&D between small businesses and research institutions

  • Increase private-sector commercialization of innovations derived from federal R&D.

A dozen agencies offer Phase 1 and Phase 2 SBIR grants; four agencies also offer STTR grants. Information on the program can be obtained on each agency's SBIR/STTR grant opportunities by clicking on the buttons below:

Here's a directory compiled by American Diversified Energy that lists all of the federal funding opportunities for each Technology Readiness Level (TRL), along with a list of 40 common mistakes that eliminate 72 percent of the funding applications and proposals submitted to federal agencies.
