Interest in ethanol–by consumers and entrepreneurs –is continuing to rise.
The 2018 Half Year Report released by the Minnesota Bio-Fuels Association on July 13 showed ethanol sales in the first six months of this year far exceeded 2017’s whole-year sales. The association credited the boost to various initiatives, including reforming regulatory processes for ethanol producers and an advertising campaign to drive consumers to E15 fuel dispensers.
Ethanol is a renewable alcohol fuel made from plant material, such as corn, sugar cane, grasses or woody biomass. Using ethanol can reduce oil dependence and greenhouse gas emissions. Ethanol fuel use in the U.S. has increased dramatically from about 1.7 billion gallons in 2001 to about 14.4 billion in 2016 (the latest full year for which statistics are available). Twenty–five states now have operating ethanol facilities.
In Minnesota—the fourth biggest ethanol producing state in the U.S.—nearly 30 million gallons of E15 was sold in the state during the first five months of 2018, according to data from the Minnesota Department of Commerce.
